Spanish innovators Basquevolt and Battera Technologies have announced a strategic roadmap to jointly develop and deliver advanced, integrated battery solutions tailored specifically for the aerospace sector. By combining Basquevolt’s breakthrough lithium metal cells—which currently exceed 400 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg)—with Battera’s specialized capabilities in battery pack integration and industrialization, the two companies are positioning themselves to meet the rigorous demands of modern aerospace platforms. The partners have established a clear timeline aimed at achieving series production by 2027, promising a sovereign European supply chain for high-energy-density energy storage.
Announced in October 2026, the collaboration addresses a critical gap in the European aviation and aerospace markets. Modern aerospace platforms, ranging from electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and regional electric airplanes to high-altitude pseudo-satellites (HAPS), require extreme levels of energy density, safety, and operational reliability. Until now, European developers seeking these ultra-high performance metrics have often had to look outside the continent for sourcing. This new partnership directly targets those advanced platforms while anchoring the complete manufacturing and integration value chain firmly within Europe.
The alliance brings together two highly complementary technological forces based in the Basque Country of Spain. Located in Vitoria-Gasteiz within the Álava Technology Park, Basquevolt specializes in the design and manufacture of next-generation solid-state electrolytes and high-performance lithium metal cells. According to technical data provided by the company, its proprietary cells already achieve energy densities exceeding 400 Wh/kg, performance levels that far surpass conventional commercial lithium-ion cells found in standard consumer electronics and automotive applications.
Meanwhile, Battera Technologies, headquartered nearby in Irun, brings deep expertise in developing, manufacturing, and industrializing complex battery systems. Battera has built a strong reputation through its hands-on experience supporting demanding aerospace and advanced mobility programs, bridging the gap between raw cell chemistry and air-worthy, fully integrated battery packs.
"This collaboration marks a pivotal step in Basquevolt’s strategy to deploy our technology in the highest-value applications where energy density is not a convenience but a critical requirement," said Pablo Fernández Santos, managing director of Basquevolt. "Battera brings its expertise in battery pack development, manufacturing, and integration, enabling high-energy-density solutions with rapid industrialisation and scalable production. Together, we are building something that does not yet exist at scale in Europe."
Building upon Basquevolt’s already impressive current cell performance, the engineering teams from both companies are already looking toward the horizon. They have set an ambitious target of pushing cell energy densities beyond the 500 Wh/kg threshold in the coming months. Successfully reaching this milestone would position their joint aerospace battery solution well ahead of any commercially available advanced battery system on the global market, providing aerospace manufacturers with unprecedented range, payload capacity, and efficiency.
Unlike many early-stage research partnerships that focus solely on laboratory experimentation, this collaboration has been structured from day one with industrial-scale production as the primary objective. The companies have agreed upon a phased industrialization roadmap designed to transition smoothly from joint engineering and prototyping to full-scale manufacturing. Series production of these integrated battery solutions is officially targeted for 2027.
A cornerstone of the strategic roadmap is the creation of a fully localized European value chain. By anchoring every stage of production within Europe—encompassing raw electrolyte synthesis, advanced cell manufacturing, complex pack integration, and final system delivery—the partners expect their product to carry the highest European content of any comparable high-performance battery solution available on the commercial market. This approach addresses growing regulatory emphasis within Europe on supply chain sovereignty, security, and reduced reliance on non-European raw materials and manufacturing hubs.
"At Battera, we believe that developing advanced battery solutions requires close collaboration between cell development and battery manufacturing from the start," said Javier Llamazares, managing director of Battera Technologies. "Through this partnership, Basquevolt’s advanced lithium metal technology and cell manufacturing capabilities, together with Battera’s experience in battery pack development and manufacturing, will allow us to deliver batteries with high energy density, tailored to the needs of aerial platforms, with production capabilities and scalability not currently available in Europe."
Company Backgrounds
Founded in 2022, Basquevolt has rapidly emerged as a prominent player in Europe’s advanced energy storage landscape. Operating from its headquarters at the Álava Technology Park, the company has secured backing from prestigious entities, including the European Innovation Council’s EIC Accelerator, alongside key industrial investors. Basquevolt’s technological foundation rests on its proprietary solid-state electrolyte, which is distinctively cathode-agnostic and designed to be compatible with existing manufacturing infrastructure used for traditional lithium-ion batteries. This compatibility offers a smoother path toward industrial scaling. Beyond its new aerospace venture with Battera, Basquevolt maintains active joint development agreements with major European automotive original equipment manufacturers, including the Renault Group, as well as ongoing collaborations spanning high-altitude pseudo-satellites and stationary energy storage systems.
Battera Technologies complements this cell-level innovation with specialized engineering and manufacturing capabilities tailored to rigorous operating environments. The company focuses on developing advanced battery systems designed specifically for aerospace and demanding mobility applications, maintaining a strict emphasis on industrial-scale production readiness and rapid manufacturing deployment.
