Austria’s Ambassador to India Highlights Deepening Bilateral Ties and Multilateral Commitment at New Delhi National Day Reception

NEW DELHI — Celebrating sovereignty, independence, and the enduring value of peace, Austria’s Ambassador to India, Dr Robert Zischg, hosted his inaugural National Day reception at his official residence in New Delhi on October 26, 2026. The milestone gathering served as a vibrant platform to reflect on an extraordinary year of diplomatic engagement, robust economic partnerships, and shared international principles between Vienna and New Delhi.

The festive evening brought together a diverse assembly of dignitaries, including senior representatives of the Indian government, members of the diplomatic corps, delegates from international organizations, prominent business leaders, and members of the local Austrian expatriate community. For Ambassador Zischg, who assumed his diplomatic post in January of the same year, the celebration carried profound personal and professional significance, marking his first time presiding over the national holiday in the world’s most populous democracy.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Zischg reflected upon his first nine-and-a-half months in India, describing the tenure as a continuous journey of discovery. He remarked on the immense scale, cultural richness, and diversity of the country, while expressing deep appreciation for the warm cooperation extended by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, as well as his dedicated colleagues at the Austrian Embassy and trade commission.

A New Chapter in Austria–India Relations

The overarching theme of the Ambassador’s address was the unprecedented momentum and transformation defining Austria-India relations through 2026. This dynamic partnership reached a historic milestone in April when Austria’s Federal Chancellor, Dr Christian Stocker, undertook an official visit to India. Accompanied by a substantial, high-level business delegation, Chancellor Stocker held extensive discussions with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Significantly, the visit marked the first time in more than four decades that an Austrian Federal Chancellor traveled to India, signaling the immense strategic importance that Vienna attaches to its relationship with New Delhi. This landmark visit was complemented throughout the year by a series of high-level ministerial and official exchanges, which have collectively injected renewed energy into bilateral political and economic dialogue.

Economic cooperation continues to serve as a critical anchor for the relationship. Highlighting the robust commercial ties, Ambassador Zischg noted that bilateral trade surpassed the €3 billion threshold in 2025. Furthermore, approximately 117 Austrian corporate subsidiaries currently operate across various sectors in India, with strong expectations for continued expansion in the near future.

The evolving partnership stretches far beyond traditional trade, encompassing advanced manufacturing, cutting-edge technology, research and innovation, and vibrant cultural exchanges. As a proud member of the European Union since 1995, Austria views India as an indispensable partner in navigating complex and rapidly changing global economic and geopolitical realities. For Ambassador Zischg and his diplomatic mission, these tangible metrics demonstrate that the bilateral relationship is no longer sustained solely by formal diplomatic channels, but is increasingly propelled by dynamic business partnerships and practical, ground-level collaboration.

Austria’s Return to the UN Security Council

Turning his focus to the global stage, Ambassador Zischg underscored Austria’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. Secured on June 3, 2026, during a vote in the UN General Assembly where Austria garnered 131 votes, the upcoming tenure represents a vital opportunity for Vienna to champion multilateralism.

The Ambassador emphasized that Austria intends to use its seat on the Security Council to vigorously uphold the foundational principles of the UN Charter at a historic juncture when international conflicts, rising tensions, and geopolitical rivalries are placing the rules-based international order under profound strain.

"Austria stands firmly for multilateralism and the principles of international law, particularly the UN Charter," Ambassador Zischg stated during his address.

Austria Marks National Day with a Renewed Commitment to India Partnership

He argued that for a country of Austria’s size, an international system governed strictly by law rather than the unilateral power or strength of individual states is not merely an idealistic preference, but a fundamental prerequisite for national security and global stability. "International law must apply equally to every state, large and small," he stressed.

Addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Ambassador highlighted its direct, existential significance for Europe as a whole. He observed that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, had profoundly shattered long-held assumptions regarding peace, security, and the inviolability of borders on the European continent. For Austria, he reiterated, achieving a peaceful, comprehensive, and just resolution to the conflict remains an absolute paramount concern.

National Day and the Meaning of Neutrality

The annual National Day of Austria commemorates the historic declaration of permanent neutrality, which was formally adopted by the Austrian Parliament on October 26, 1955. This constitutional milestone followed the restoration of the nation’s sovereignty in the wake of the Second World War.

For a decade following the conclusion of the war, Austria had been divided into four occupation zones administered by the Allied powers—the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and France. The signing of the historic Austrian State Treaty on May 15, 1955, successfully paved the way for the complete withdrawal of all foreign occupation troops and the restoration of full, unhindered independence. The subsequent declaration of neutrality later that autumn codified the nation’s unique geopolitical posture.

Reflecting on this foundational chapter of Austrian history, Ambassador Zischg noted that the national memory of foreign occupation continues to deeply inform Austria’s modern understanding of sovereignty, independence, and statehood.

"Austrians therefore fully understand what foreign occupation means," he said, underscoring the fierce resolve with which his country approaches the preservation of its independence and its active contribution to maintaining peace within Europe and beyond.

Austria’s permanent neutrality, operating in tandem with its responsibilities as an integral member of the European Union, continues to shape its diplomatic outlook. This dual identity reinforces Vienna’s unwavering commitment to dialogue, mediation, conflict prevention, and the peaceful settlement of international disputes.

A Personal Note of Gratitude and Cultural Celebration

Transitioning from broader geopolitical challenges to matters of diplomatic hospitality, the Ambassador expressed his sincere gratitude for the institutional and personal support he has received since arriving in India. He offered special thanks to Secretary (West) Sibi George and the wider team at the Ministry of External Affairs for their invaluable cooperation and administrative assistance, particularly in ensuring the smooth facilitation of the numerous high-level official visits hosted throughout the year.

He further commended the dedicated personnel of the Austrian Embassy and the Austrian trade commission, praising their hard work and professionalism in managing a remarkably busy and demanding diplomatic calendar.

The formal proceedings were followed by a reception that fully embraced Austria’s rich culinary and cultural traditions. Guests were treated to an authentic spread of classic Austrian culinary specialties, including traditional goulash, cabbage noodles, warm apple strudel, and rich chocolate cake, complemented by a selection of fine Austrian wines. Set against an atmosphere of genuine friendship, warmth, and hospitality, the gathering offered attendees an immersive experience of European culture, bringing a successful close to a landmark day for the Austrian diplomatic mission in New Delhi.
