AVI-SPL and Matternet Partner to Bring Autonomous Drone Delivery to Field Technicians in Major Metropolitan Markets

TAMPA, Fla., and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — In a move designed to radically transform the logistics of digital workplace technology services, AVI-SPL has announced a strategic partnership with autonomous drone pioneer Matternet. Announced jointly from the companies’ respective headquarters on September 15, 2026, the collaboration pairs Matternet’s industry-leading, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) type-certified drone platform with AVI-SPL’s extensive service network to transport crucial replacement parts and equipment directly to field technicians operating in heavily congested urban and suburban metro markets.

The partnership bridges the gap between advanced digital workplace solutions and cutting-edge aerial logistics. By combining AVI-SPL’s comprehensive service, integration, and supply chain operations with Matternet’s autonomous drone technology, the initiative targets the perennial bottleneck of ground-transportation delays. Instead of forcing field technicians to wait hours for essential components to navigate gridlocked city streets, the companies aim to reduce delivery windows to a matter of minutes, significantly boosting operational efficiency and customer satisfaction across densely populated metropolitan areas.

The collaboration represents a forward-thinking approach to modern B2B field service operations, where downtime can result in substantial operational friction for corporate clients. By leveraging the speed and agility of aerial logistics, AVI-SPL aims to bypass traditional urban traffic hurdles entirely, ensuring that its workforce is equipped with the right tools and parts precisely when and where they are needed.

"At AVI-SPL, we are always looking for new ways to enhance the customer experience and support our technicians in the field," said John Murphy, chief operating officer at AVI-SPL, elaborating on the strategic vision behind the agreement. "This partnership is an important step toward reimagining how critical equipment moves through our service ecosystem. Autonomous drone delivery can improve responsiveness, reduce transportation delays, and create entirely new service capabilities for our customers."

Expected Drone Delivery Use Cases

The partnership is initially anchored by three distinct use cases designed to maximize the impact of aerial logistics on AVI-SPL’s daily operations.

The primary application focuses on rapid parts delivery to AVI-SPL installers and technicians working in densely packed downtown areas, where traditional vehicular transport is frequently slowed by heavy traffic congestion and parking limitations. By dropping replacement parts directly to or near active job sites, the system aims to eliminate the downtime associated with courier delays.

The second use case centers on building premium, high-tier service offerings. This includes establishing faster response times and tighter, more rigorous service-level agreements (SLAs) for enterprise customers who require the highest possible levels of technical support and minimal system downtime. For mission-critical workplace technologies, the ability to shave hours off a repair cycle provides a distinct competitive advantage.

The third pillar of the partnership involves integrating drone logistics more broadly across the overarching AVI-SPL supply chain network. By strategically shifting routine or emergency parts distribution from road transport to aerial routes in dense metro markets, the company expects to ease logistical pressures on its existing fleet while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions associated with urban delivery vehicles.

Andreas Raptopoulos, founder and chief executive officer of Matternet, highlighted the broader industry implications of the collaboration. "Drone delivery will transform time-critical B2B logistics," Raptopoulos noted. "Instead of waiting hours for a part, a technician can have it within minutes, which allows a job to be completed faster and at a lower cost. We’re excited to partner with AVI-SPL to bring the value of ultra-fast autonomous delivery to this vertical."

Matternet Certification and Operating Record

The operational backbone of the new partnership rests on Matternet’s proven technological ecosystem, which includes the Matternet M2 drone, the proprietary Matternet Station, and the comprehensive Matternet Software Platform. Matternet operates this sophisticated technology either independently or in close collaboration with established logistics giants, most notably UPS.

Matternet has established a series of significant regulatory milestones throughout its operational history. The company was the very first enterprise authorized to conduct commercial Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone delivery operations over major cities in Switzerland. Subsequently, it became the first to launch routine, revenue-generating drone delivery operations within the United States.

A key differentiator for Matternet within the competitive autonomous aviation sector is its regulatory standing with federal authorities. The company holds both standard type certification and production certification from the FAA—rigorous designations that validate the safety, airworthiness, and manufacturing standards of its aircraft. Furthermore, Matternet partners with major logistics and aviation providers, including UPS and Ameriflight, to conduct complex Part 135 operations under strict regulatory oversight.

The company’s journey began with humanitarian delivery missions in 2014, testing the viability of aerial logistics in challenging environments. Following those early deployments, Matternet successfully transitioned into commercial B2B healthcare operations, launching services in Europe in 2017 and expanding to the United States in 2019. Building upon its medical delivery success, the company further expanded its operational footprint into B2C delivery in Silicon Valley in 2024.

To date, Matternet’s robust technology platform has successfully powered more than 60,000 commercial flights across complex urban and suburban environments throughout the United States and Europe, establishing a deep operational record that now supports its entry into enterprise digital workplace technology logistics alongside AVI-SPL.
