SafetyWing Launches ‘Nomad Citizen’ to Provide All-In-One Social Safety Net for Digital Nomads

If you operate as a digital nomad or run a location-independent business, you are likely familiar with a glaring professional hazard: you are either heavily overpaying for fragmented insurance policies—juggling separate travel, medical, and accident coverages—or you are dangerously underinsured. Traditional employment comes with an embedded safety net of corporate health plans, paid parental leave, disability protections, and government-backed social services.

For modern entrepreneurs roaming the globe, however, those protections vanish. Because location-independent workers lack citizenship status in the countries where they temporarily reside, they are locked out of local social safety nets. When an unexpected medical emergency or a sudden dry spell in client contracts strikes, the financial burden falls entirely on the individual.

Recognizing this critical gap in the modern remote workforce, travel insurance provider SafetyWing has launched a comprehensive new product called Nomad Citizen. Designed to function as a complete all-in-one safety net, the annual membership bundles health insurance, international travel protection, income protection, parental leave, and long-term disability benefits into a single plan tailored specifically for borderless entrepreneurs and business owners.

What is Nomad Citizen?

Nomad Citizen is structured as an annual membership program created explicitly for location-independent business owners and freelancers who spend more than six months of the year outside their home country. By default, their lives, tax situations, and income streams cross international borders.

The plan provides global health and security coverage with minimal residency restrictions, covering members almost anywhere in the world, with the notable exception of Puerto Rico. Unlike standard travel insurance policies that are strictly designed for short-term holiday emergencies, Nomad Citizen functions more like a comprehensive domestic benefits package transported across international lines.

The introduction of this product targets a demographic that has rapidly expanded over the past decade. Millions of people now make a living managing online businesses, software companies, design agencies, and freelance portfolios from cafes and co-working spaces across Southeast Asia, Latin America, Europe, and beyond. Yet, despite contributing significantly to the global remote economy, these workers have historically had to piece together their own risk management strategies from disconnected financial products.

Who Can Sign Up?

To be eligible for a Nomad Citizen membership, applicants must be under the age of 56 and earning a minimum of $4,000 USD per month. The enrollment process is conducted entirely online, requiring members to select their desired start date, complete a declaration confirming they are in good health, and verify that they will spend more than half the year outside their passport country. Members also have the option to add their partners and any dependent children under the age of 18 to the policy.

The target demographic is clear: professionals living abroad who lack access to state-provided social services. For instance, a remote worker residing permanently in Sweden already enjoys robust state-sponsored healthcare and safety nets, making a product like Nomad Citizen largely redundant. However, an entrepreneur based out of Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France who operates independently and lacks local civic benefits faces entirely different vulnerabilities.

Industry observers note the severe financial exposure faced by uninsured or underinsured nomads. A stark example involves a remote entrepreneur in Mexico who was struck by a car and suffered severe injuries requiring prolonged hospitalization. The accident rapidly exhausted his standard travel insurance limits, and because he was incapacitated for months during rehabilitation, his income dropped to zero, forcing him to rely on public crowdfunding campaigns to cover basic living expenses. Proponents of the Nomad Citizen program argue that such vulnerabilities are precisely what an integrated income-protection and health package aims to mitigate.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing for the Nomad Citizen membership varies by age bracket. For individuals enrolling on or after July 1, 2026, the cost is set at $443 per month for members aged 18 to 39. For those between the ages of 40 and 49, the premium increases to $665 per month, while members aged 50 to 55 pay $875 per month.

Dependent children can be added to the plan for $143 per month, though couples enrolling in the program can add their first child under the age of 10 at no additional cost. Members retain the flexibility to pay either on a monthly basis or annually.

Nomad Citizen: A New Social Safety Net for Entrepreneurs

Regarding geographic coverage, the policy is truly worldwide, including the United States. However, company representatives note that coverage limits were not explicitly structured for extensive healthcare utilization within the United States, given the uniquely high costs and structural complexities of the American healthcare system.

What Is Included?

The core appeal of Nomad Citizen lies in its ambition to replicate the comprehensive safety net of a traditional corporate job. The package includes several distinct pillars of coverage.

The income protection benefit addresses what is arguably the most glaring void in the freelance market. Traditional income protection and disability insurance schemes typically require a fixed employer, a permanent domestic address, and long-term residency in a specific country. This leaves cross-border freelancers and sole proprietors effectively uninsurable through conventional government or private assistance programs. Under Nomad Citizen, if a remote worker experiences a sudden loss of income—whether due to layoffs, dried-up client contracts, or a disabling medical condition—the plan pays out up to $4,000 per month for a duration of three to six months to help the member stabilize their finances.

The health insurance component offers up to $1.5 million in annual coverage. It encompasses inpatient and outpatient care, prescription drugs, dental and vision care, mental health services, maternity care, preventive wellness therapies, and routine checkups.

Travel protection is also fully integrated into the membership, covering typical travel disruptions such as trip delays, trip cancellations, stolen electronic equipment, lost luggage, medical evacuations, robbery, and emergency family visits if a member is hospitalized abroad.

For family planning and long-term security, the package includes specialized provisions. Parental leave benefits pay $4,000 per month if a member has a baby or becomes the legal guardian of a child, allowing them to step away from work without immediate financial distress, subject to a three-year waiting period. Furthermore, long-term disability coverage provides $4,000 per month up to age 75 if a member suffers a catastrophic, permanent life event—such as the loss of eyesight, a major stroke, a cancer diagnosis, or the inability to perform basic daily activities like walking or eating independently—that permanently halts their ability to work.

To streamline the administrative burden of living abroad, the membership includes visa assistance. Members can browse and apply for various government-sponsored long-term nomad visas directly through the app interface, bypassing complex government websites. SafetyWing handles direct communications with immigration authorities and conducts quality checks on applications prior to submission to maximize approval rates.

Members also gain access to the Nomad Care Map, a curated database of over 4,000 vetted healthcare providers worldwide, complete with peer reviews detailing service quality and English proficiency. Financial transactions are simplified through the SafetyWing card, a worldwide prepaid debit card sent to all members. It allows users to pay for covered medical services up to $500 directly, automatically generating a paid claim and eliminating out-of-pocket expenses or waiting periods for reimbursement.

All services—including claims processing, policy management, live customer chat support, provider searches, and visa applications—are centralized inside a single mobile application, removing the need for nomads to juggle multiple disparate insurance providers.

Making Claims

The administrative workflow for utilizing the benefits has been designed for remote execution. For healthcare services, members can either pay out of pocket and submit documentation for reimbursement or contact the 24/7 support team to coordinate direct payment arrangements with the medical provider. Travel insurance claims require standard documentation such as police reports, airline delay notices, and receipts. For income protection claims, members work directly with SafetyWing case managers to verify income loss and demonstrate active efforts to secure new revenue streams.

Ultimately, the product addresses the lingering anxieties shared by many solopreneurs who navigate the world independently. By bundling health, travel, income protection, and social safety nets into a single cross-border framework, Nomad Citizen attempts to solve one of the most persistent operational challenges of the modern digital nomad lifestyle.
