Empowering the Next Generation: Daphne Draws Data Reaches 15,000 Students Across the Globe

In under two years, an innovative educational initiative has successfully helped more than fifteen thousand elementary school students across nineteen United States states and eight countries build essential confidence in collecting, visualizing, and interpreting data.

The initiative, spearheaded by the team behind storytelling with data (SWD) through its children’s book and program Daphne Draws Data, operates on the philosophy that critical thinking and clear communication are vital competencies that do not need to wait until adulthood. Helping people make sense of information and present it effectively remains at the heart of the SWD mission, and sharing these foundational concepts with young learners has opened new doors for early childhood education.

Speaking as SWD’s Education and Outreach Specialist, the journey of bringing this work to light has been a profound privilege. Marking a major milestone for the initiative, this update highlights the remarkable accomplishments achieved since publication and outlines the ongoing efforts to reach the next wave of fifteen thousand children.

By partnering with a diverse network of nonprofits, after-school organizations, local libraries, museums, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-focused education groups, the initiative has designed and deployed hands-on graphing experiences. These programs are carefully structured to help kids actively collect data, draw their own graphs, and interpret what their discoveries actually mean. To ensure that learning extends far beyond structured classroom hours and group workshops, the organization has also donated nearly nine thousand books to underserved communities and Title I schools. Educators, community leaders, and organizers interested in learning more about these programs and book donation opportunities can reach out directly via email to the outreach team.

Crucially, the impact of the initiative has extended far beyond the young students it directly targets. One of the most rewarding and unexpected outcomes has been observing how the program helps educators, nonprofit leaders, program coordinators, and parents master the exact same core data storytelling lessons taught to corporate and business professionals. These fundamental skills include choosing an appropriate graph type, removing visual clutter, focusing audience attention, and communicating information through a compelling narrative. For adults working in community spaces and education, mastering these competencies provides tangible benefits, helping them effectively advocate for funding, secure vital resources, and clearly demonstrate the measurable impact of their daily work.

Building on the success of printed books and localized graphing workshops, this year marked an exciting expansion with the official launch of the interactive Daphne Draws Data exhibit. Designed as an immersive experience, the exhibit allows kids to contribute their own live data in real time, compare their personal responses with those of their peers, and visually understand how individual data inputs seamlessly become part of a much larger collective story. The exhibit made its debut and is currently hosted at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, with strong organizational hopes to expand the installation to additional children’s museums and science centers across the country.

Another major driver behind the initiative’s rapid and expansive reach has been a dedicated network of enthusiastic Data Detective leaders. These passionate volunteers bring graphing with Daphne programs directly into their own local communities. Utilizing pre-developed program resources provided by SWD, these volunteers empower children by teaching them how to answer their own curious questions through the systematic collection and drawing of data.

As the initiative looks toward the future, the core mission remains focused on expanding its footprint and equipping even more young minds with analytical tools. For individuals and organizations whose values align with this educational mission, numerous opportunities exist to get involved and support the ongoing expansion. Together, supporters, educators, and community leaders can continue helping children build lifelong confidence with data and develop analytical skills that will serve them well throughout their educational and personal lives.
