The North American transit bus market is bracing for a significant shift as industry heavyweights and new entrants alike roll out strategic expansions to address a persistent equipment shortage. ABC Companies has officially announced the launch of a brand-new line of heavy-duty transit buses under the banner of Cor Transit, introducing a fresh domestic competitor to the market. Simultaneously, Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is preparing to bring its own line of electric buses to the United States through a strategic partnership.
These developments come at a critical juncture for public transit agencies across the United States and Canada, many of which have struggled with elongated delivery timelines, supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and a restricted pool of available manufacturers. By offering alternative procurement pathways and new vehicle designs, these initiatives aim to provide much-needed relief to transit operators striving to modernize their fleets and meet ambitious sustainability goals.
Meeting High Market Demand and Easing Supply Constraints
The U.S. transit bus manufacturing sector has weathered a turbulent period marked by severe supply chain shortages, shifting tariff landscapes, and the unexpected departure of prominent manufacturing players. These combined pressures have left many transit agencies facing unprecedented backlogs, with wait times for new buses stretching out for months or even years.

ABC Companies hopes to alter this trajectory with its newly formed Cor Transit division. According to company leadership, the timing could not be more critical for prospective buyers searching for reliable alternatives.
"There’s a high demand in the market right now, and I think we’ll be able to fill it," said ABC Chief Commercial Officer John Walsh in an interview with Smart Cities Dive. "It should help delivery times."
Walsh noted that ABC expects its Cor Transit manufacturing operations to produce and release their very first vehicle deliveries by the year 2028. While the company has not yet finalized or publicly announced the specific geographic location for its manufacturing plant, leadership has confirmed a vital detail for agencies utilizing federal funding: the newly engineered heavy-duty bus will meet all applicable requirements outlined in the Build America Buy America Act. This compliance ensures that transit providers relying on federal grants can procure the vehicles without running afoul of domestic sourcing mandates.
A Focus on Operator Ergonomics and Passenger Experience
In developing the Cor Transit line, ABC Companies set out to rethink transit vehicle design from the ground up, paying close attention to the day-to-day realities faced by both passengers and operating personnel.

"The goal is to develop a product that the transit agencies will understand," said Michael Ammann, ABC’s vice president of the transit division.
Beyond functionality, Ammann emphasized that the company wanted to create an environment that attracts riders back to public transportation. The interior concept was carefully crafted to feature a "calming" aesthetic, incorporating ambient lighting and a distinctly "European feel." Furthermore, the vehicle layout prioritizes accessibility and smooth passenger flow. The bus is engineered to accommodate a wheelchair ramp at either the front door, the center door, or both locations, and is designed with a notably wide aisle to facilitate rapid boarding and disembarking.
Operator comfort and safety were equally paramount during the design phase. Walsh pointed out that modern safety partitions, while necessary for protecting bus drivers, can sometimes restrict optimal airflow within the operator’s compartment, leading to discomfort during long shifts. To proactively solve this issue, Ammann explained that the Cor Transit model will come equipped as standard with a dedicated driver’s air conditioning system. This dedicated climate control feature is also designed to assist with window defogging and continuous air circulation on particularly warm days, enhancing overall working conditions for drivers.
While zero-emission technologies continue to dominate long-term transit planning conversations, the initial wave of Cor Transit vehicles rolling off the production line will be diesel-powered. However, company representatives have clarified that ABC plans to expand the lineup to include alternative propulsion systems and powertrains in the future, giving agencies flexibility as their respective fleet electrification plans mature.

VinFast Enters the U.S. Transit Market via Strategic Partnership
While ABC Companies focuses on domestic production compliance and traditional-to-evolving powertrains, Vietnamese automaker VinFast is taking a different route to establish a footprint in the North American heavy-duty vehicle sector. VinFast has announced plans to introduce its electric transit buses to the U.S. market through a collaborative agreement with NexMove Certified, a specialized joint venture formed by Transportation Management Services and EV charging infrastructure provider Zeem Solutions.
Rather than selling vehicles on a standalone basis, the partnering companies intend to offer an integrated, turnkey model. Public transit agencies and private fleet operators will be able to acquire the VinFast electric buses alongside comprehensive charging infrastructure, ongoing maintenance, and operational support packaged within a single purchase agreement. This bundled approach is intended to lower the operational hurdles often associated with transitioning a fleet from internal combustion engines to battery-electric technology.
The VinFast buses will be manufactured in facilities located in Vietnam. Because of their international manufacturing origin, Robert Hill, vice president of electric bus sales for VinFast in the U.S., confirmed that these vehicles will not meet the domestic sourcing criteria of the Build America Buy America Act. Consequently, their adoption may lean more heavily toward agencies or private operators not strictly bound by federal grant procurement rules. To instill market confidence in the imported electric platform, Hill noted that the vehicles will be backed by a substantial 15-year warranty.
As both ABC Companies and VinFast advance their respective go-to-market strategies, North American transit operators will soon have additional options to navigate ongoing industry hurdles, modernize aging fleets, and address the persistent demand for reliable public transportation vehicles.
