New Transit Bus Options Emerging as ABC Companies and VinFast Prepare for North American Market Entry

The North American transit bus sector is bracing for a significant shift as new manufacturing competition and international partnerships emerge to address a prolonged period of supply chain instability, tariff pressures, and manufacturing consolidation. ABC Companies has officially announced the launch of a brand-new line of heavy-duty transit buses under the name Cor Transit, while global electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is preparing to introduce its Vietnamese-built electric buses to the U.S. market through a strategic collaboration with NexMove Certified.

These developments come at a critical time for public transit agencies across the United States and Canada. In recent years, the industry has grappled with severe supply chain bottlenecks, component shortages, and the departure of notable manufacturing competitors, leaving long backlogs for agencies trying to modernize their fleets. The introduction of fresh manufacturing capacity and alternative vehicle options is widely anticipated by municipal leaders and transit operators who have faced extended wait times for vital fleet replacements.

Industry Pressures and the Push for New Competition

The U.S. transit bus market has experienced considerable turmoil over the past several years, marked by supply chain disruptions, changing federal regulations, tariffs, and the loss of two prominent manufacturing players. These combined factors created massive backlogs for zero-emission and traditional transit bus orders, leaving many municipal agencies waiting years for vehicle deliveries.

Industry leaders believe the timing is ripe for new entrants to alleviate these pressures. ABC Chief Commercial Officer John Walsh noted that the current market environment features remarkably high demand for new transit vehicles, a gap that the company aims to fill to help normalize delivery timelines for public agencies.

ABC Companies expects its newly established Cor Transit heavy-duty transit bus manufacturing operation to roll out its initial vehicle deliveries by 2028. While the company has not yet finalized the specific geographic location for its manufacturing facility, leadership has confirmed that the upcoming buses will be designed to comply with applicable requirements under the Build America Buy America Act. This compliance is essential for municipal transit agencies that rely heavily on federal grants to finance their rolling stock acquisitions.

Designing for Operators, Technicians, and Passengers

In developing the Cor Transit line, ABC Companies focused heavily on the firsthand experiences of the people who interact with transit buses every day: passengers, drivers, and service technicians. Michael Ammann, ABC vice president of the transit division, emphasized that the overarching goal was to build a product that transit agencies immediately understand while offering a welcoming environment for riders.

Ammann described the interior of the upcoming bus as having a calming, European-inspired aesthetic, featuring ambient lighting and an open, accessible layout. The vehicle has been engineered to incorporate a wheelchair ramp that can be installed at the front door, the center door, or both locations, depending on the specific operational needs of a transit agency. Additionally, the bus will feature wide aisles to facilitate smooth passenger boarding and alighting.

From an operator and maintenance perspective, Walsh explained that the vehicle was engineered from the ground up to address common ergonomic and mechanical challenges. For instance, modern transit buses often utilize physical driver safety partitions to protect operators. While these partitions are crucial for security, they can inadvertently restrict airflow within the operator’s compartment, leading to uncomfortable working conditions for drivers during warm weather.

To resolve this issue, Ammann stated that the Cor Transit model will come standard with a dedicated driver’s air conditioning system. This integrated system is designed not only to keep the operator comfortable but also to assist with window defogging and air circulation on hot or humid days, directly addressing long-standing complaints from transit operators regarding climate control behind the safety barrier.

Initially, the first wave of Cor Transit vehicles will be powered by traditional diesel engines to meet immediate market demands, but the company has structured the platform with the flexibility to offer alternative powertrains in the future as zero-emission adoption continues to evolve across the transit sector.

VinFast Enters the U.S. Market Through Strategic Partnership

While ABC Companies prepares its domestic manufacturing pipeline for 2028, Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is executing a different strategy to break into the North American transit market. VinFast plans to bring its electric buses to the United States through a collaborative agreement with NexMove Certified, which operates as a joint venture between Transportation Management Services and electric vehicle charging infrastructure provider Zeem Solutions.

Under this partnership, the companies plan to offer transit agencies a comprehensive package that bundles the electric buses together with charging infrastructure, ongoing maintenance, and operational support through a single purchase agreement. This streamlined model aims to reduce the complexity that many municipal agencies face when attempting to electrify their fleets independently.

Robert Hill, VinFast vice president of U.S. electric bus sales, noted that the vehicles will be manufactured in Vietnam and, consequently, will not meet the domestic sourcing criteria outlined in the Build America Buy America Act. Because of this, the buses are expected to target specific markets and private or regional operators that may have more flexibility regarding federal grant procurement rules. To instill confidence in buyers, Hill confirmed that the imported electric buses will be backed by a 15-year warranty.
