New Transit Bus Offerings from ABC Companies and VinFast Aim to Relieve North American Fleet Pressures

The North American transit bus market is bracing for a significant shift as industry players move to introduce fresh competition and alternative options for municipal fleets grappling with long-standing manufacturing bottlenecks. ABC Companies has officially announced the launch of a brand-new line of heavy-duty transit buses under the Cor Transit brand, signaling a major expansion for the firm. Simultaneously, Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is preparing to bring its own electric transit buses to the United States through a newly forged partnership, opening up additional pathways for agencies looking to modernize and green their fleets.

These dual developments come at a critical juncture for public transportation providers across the United States and Canada. Over the past few years, the transit bus sector has experienced severe supply chain disruptions, fluctuating tariffs on essential materials, and the sudden loss of two prominent domestic manufacturers. These combined pressures have left many transit agencies facing extended delivery timelines, massive vehicle order backlogs, and limited choices when attempting to replace aging fleets or expand service to meet growing community needs.

ABC Companies believes its upcoming entry into heavy-duty manufacturing will help alleviate these widespread industry frustrations. According to John Walsh, the chief commercial officer at ABC Companies, the high demand currently observed across the market creates an ideal environment for new manufacturing capacity. Walsh expressed confidence that the introduction of the Cor Transit line will help ease the strain on delivery schedules and provide transit agencies with a reliable, competitive alternative.

ABC Companies expects its new Cor Transit manufacturing operation to produce and deliver its very first vehicles by 2028. While the company has not yet finalized or announced the specific geographic location for its manufacturing facility, leadership has confirmed that the buses will be built to comply with applicable requirements under the federal Build America Buy America Act. This compliance is a vital consideration for municipal and regional transit agencies that rely heavily on federal grants and funding allocations to support their capital procurement programs.

In designing the Cor Transit line, ABC Companies sought to balance the practical needs of transit authorities with passenger comfort and driver ergonomics. Michael Ammann, the vice president of the transit division at ABC, noted that the primary objective was to develop a product that feels intuitive to transit agencies while remaining genuinely inviting for everyday riders. Ammann described the interior aesthetic as having a calming, European-inspired feel, complete with modern ambient lighting. Furthermore, the vehicle has been engineered with accessibility in mind, featuring wide aisles and a flexible wheelchair ramp layout that can be installed at the front door, the center door, or both locations depending on the specific operational requirements of the buyer.

Operator welfare and maintenance efficiency also drove the engineering process behind the scenes. Walsh emphasized that the bus was conceived from the ground up with service technicians and bus drivers in consideration. Modern transit buses frequently utilize driver safety partitions to protect operators from physical threats, but these barriers can inadvertently restrict airflow within the driver’s compartment, leading to discomfort during warmer months. To counter this common complaint, Ammann pointed out that every Cor Transit vehicle will come standard with a dedicated driver’s air conditioning system. This integrated climate control feature is designed not only to keep the operator comfortable but also to assist with window defogging and maintain proper air circulation throughout the workspace.

As the Cor Transit program gets underway, the initial rollout will focus on diesel-powered configurations. However, ABC Companies has indicated that it intends to introduce alternative powertrains in the future to accommodate transit agencies transitioning toward sustainable energy models.

While ABC Companies prepares its domestic manufacturing pipeline, VinFast is pursuing a different route to enter the North American transit market. The Vietnamese automaker has finalized a collaboration with NexMove Certified, a specialized joint venture formed by Transportation Management Services and EV charging infrastructure provider Zeem Solutions. Through this strategic alliance, the companies plan to offer VinFast’s electric transit buses directly to U.S. buyers, bundled together with comprehensive charging solutions, ongoing maintenance, and operational support packaged into a single purchase agreement.

Unlike their domestically produced counterparts, the VinFast electric buses will be manufactured overseas in Vietnam and will not meet the statutory criteria for Buy America funding requirements. This distinction means that agencies utilizing federal grant money restricted by domestic sourcing mandates may face limitations in purchasing them. Nevertheless, the vehicles will be backed by a substantial 15-year warranty, according to Robert Hill, the vice president of electric bus sales for VinFast in the U.S., offering a long-term assurance of reliability for prospective municipal and private fleet operators evaluating the new offering.
