The North American transit bus industry is preparing for a significant shake-up as new manufacturing options and international partnerships emerge to tackle long-standing supply chain bottlenecks. ABC Companies has officially announced the launch of a brand-new line of heavy-duty transit buses, while Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is poised to bring its own fleet of electric buses to the U.S. market through a strategic new partnership.
These developments arrive at a critical time for public transit agencies across the United States and Canada, which have faced profound challenges in recent years, including severe supply chain disruptions, escalating tariffs, and the departure of key manufacturing competitors from the marketplace.
The U.S. transit bus sector has experienced immense strain, resulting in massive backlogs for zero-emission and traditional transit vehicles alike. Industry leaders and municipal officials have long sought alternative manufacturing solutions to expedite vehicle delivery times and modernize aging fleets. The entrance of fresh competitors into the market is widely viewed by industry observers as a necessary step toward stabilizing procurement timelines for transit agencies.

A New Competitive Edge for North American Transit
Addressing the high demand currently plaguing the sector, ABC Chief Commercial Officer John Walsh expressed confidence in the company’s ability to provide much-needed relief. According to Walsh, the market’s current trajectory demands expanded production capabilities, and the introduction of their new offerings should dramatically improve delivery timelines for public agencies striving to maintain reliable service levels.
ABC Companies has confirmed that its newly formed heavy-duty transit bus manufacturing operation, operating under the name Cor Transit, is slated to make its very first vehicle deliveries by 2028. While the company has not yet finalized the specific geographic location for its manufacturing facility, leadership has assured prospective municipal clients that the vehicles will comply with all applicable requirements of the Build America Buy America Act. This compliance is essential for transit agencies that rely heavily on federal grants and funding to procure rolling stock.
The design philosophy behind the Cor Transit line focuses heavily on both passenger experience and operator ergonomics. Michael Ammann, Vice President of the Transit Division at ABC, emphasized that the overarching goal is to deliver a product that transit agencies can easily integrate into their existing operations while simultaneously creating an inviting atmosphere for everyday riders. Ammann described the interior environment as calming, deliberately incorporating modern ambient lighting and a distinct European aesthetic. Furthermore, the layout has been engineered to maximize accessibility, featuring wide aisles and the flexibility to accommodate wheelchair ramps at either the front door, the center door, or both locations.
Designing From the Ground Up with Operators in Mind
In developing the Cor Transit line, ABC engineers approached the project from the ground up, placing a strong emphasis on the practical day-to-day needs of service technicians and bus operators. Walsh and Ammann noted that operational feedback often highlights shortcomings in standard vehicle layouts, such as driver safety partitions that inadvertently restrict airflow within the operator’s enclosed compartment.

To resolve this common discomfort, the new Cor Transit models will come equipped as standard with a dedicated driver’s air conditioning system. Ammann explained that this dedicated climate control feature not only keeps operators comfortable during warm weather but also assists in defogging side windows to ensure optimal visibility at all times.
While the initial rollout of Cor Transit vehicles will feature traditional diesel-powered engines, the company has structured its platform with adaptability in mind. ABC plans to expand the lineup by offering alternative powertrains in the future, allowing transit agencies to transition toward cleaner technologies at a pace that aligns with their specific municipal sustainability goals and infrastructure capabilities.
VinFast Expands U.S. Footprint Through Strategic Partnership
Simultaneously, the North American market is set to welcome a major international player as VinFast prepares to introduce its Vietnamese-made electric buses to the United States. This market entry will be facilitated through a collaboration with NexMove Certified, which functions as a joint venture between Transportation Management Services and EV charging infrastructure provider Zeem Solutions.
Under this collaborative model, the participating companies intend to offer municipal and private fleet operators a streamlined purchasing experience. Rather than requiring agencies to piece together vehicles, charging infrastructure, and maintenance protocols from separate vendors, the partnership plans to offer the VinFast electric buses alongside comprehensive charging, maintenance, and operational support bundled into a single, unified purchase agreement.

Unlike their domestically manufactured counterparts, the VinFast electric buses will be manufactured in Vietnam and consequently will not meet the stringent domestic sourcing mandates outlined in Buy America regulations. However, to instill confidence among prospective U.S. buyers, Robert Hill, Vice President of Electric Bus Sales for VinFast in the U.S., noted at a recent industry conference that the imported vehicles will be backed by a substantial 15-year warranty, signaling long-term commitment and reliability as these new electric models prepare to navigate American city streets.
