Amex announces 4 major Centurion Lounge updates — including its largest lounge ever

While the vast majority of the updates are overwhelmingly positive for travelers who rely on premium airport spaces, the news does come with one minor setback. American Express officially confirmed that its highly anticipated Centurion Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport will not open in 2026 as originally scheduled. Instead, the opening date has been pushed back, with the new space now expected to welcome travelers sometime in 2027.

However, American Express is attempting to soften the blow of the delay by significantly upgrading the plans for the Newark location, making the extra wait worthwhile for cardholders frequenting the New York metropolitan area.

The Largest Amex Centurion Lounge is Coming to Newark

When the new Amex Centurion Lounge officially opens its doors at Newark Liberty International Airport, it will no longer be bound by the previously announced footprint of 18,000 square feet. Instead, American Express has expanded the project to span more than 30,000 square feet.

This massive upscale environment will immediately claim the title of the largest Centurion Lounge in the entire global network. It will comfortably surpass the current titleholder, the Atlanta Centurion Lounge, which measures close to 26,000 square feet.

The Newark lounge will be situated in Terminal A and will stretch across two distinct floors. Within this sprawling space, travelers will find three separate bar experiences designed to cater to various tastes. The main bar will serve craft cocktails and curated wines. Meanwhile, a specialty bar will put a modern spin on New Jersey’s classic diner culture, and a terrace bar will pay direct tribute to the state’s deep Italian heritage by offering authentic gelato, Italian pastries, and specialized cocktails.

Additionally, the lounge will feature a Blue Roast by Amex coffee and wellness bar. This wellness-focused concept provides freshly pulled espresso, cold brew, smoothies, and avocado toast. For guests looking for a substantial meal, the Newark location will feature dishes curated by The Culinary Collective, a group of renowned chefs that includes Kwame Onwuachi, Mike Solomonov, Mashama Bailey, and Sarah Grueneberg.

The opening of the Newark lounge will also mark a major milestone for American Express. Once operational, the credit card issuer will become the first to achieve full coverage across all three major New York City-area airports, having a dedicated Centurion Lounge at each hub.

Second Amex Centurion Lounge Coming to London Heathrow

International travelers will also see a major boost to their airport experience with the announcement of a second Centurion Lounge at London Heathrow Airport. The upcoming facility will be located in Terminal 5 and is scheduled to open its doors in 2028.

Measuring approximately 9,000 square feet, the new Terminal 5 lounge will complement the existing Amex Centurion Lounge in Heathrow’s Terminal 3, which originally opened to travelers in 2021. According to American Express, the upcoming space will feature premium food and beverage selections, a diverse array of comfortable seating options, dedicated work areas, an exclusive VIP area, and an interior design heavily inspired by local London culture and the River Thames.

This strategic addition will make American Express the first credit card issuer to operate two distinct airport lounges at London Heathrow, further cementing its footprint in major international transit hubs.

Houston Centurion Lounge Tripling in Size

Domestically, travelers flying through Texas will see a dramatic transformation at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The existing Centurion Lounge at Houston’s IAH airport, which currently measures a modest 8,000 square feet, is set to nearly triple in size to more than 23,000 square feet.

Scheduled for completion in 2028, this massive physical expansion will elevate the Houston location into one of the largest Centurion Lounges in the entire global network. The expanded facility will incorporate a Blue Roast coffee and wellness bar, a signature element that has quickly become a staple across the network. Furthermore, it will introduce a specialty dining experience inspired by the vibrant and diverse local culinary scene of Houston.

The expanded footprint will also introduce a second full-service bar, significantly increasing the overall seating capacity while adding new showers and modern restrooms to accommodate the heavy passenger volume passing through the Texas hub.

Philadelphia Centurion Lounge Expanding

Philadelphia International Airport is also slated for a major upgrade. The local Centurion Lounge, which first opened its doors to travelers in 2017, is scheduled to almost double in size, expanding to 12,000 square feet across two distinct stories.

The renovation work is slated to begin rapidly. The current PHL lounge will temporarily close its doors for construction starting on October 16 of this year. It is projected to reopen to the public by the end of 2027. When travelers return, they will experience a revitalized layout featuring a design heavily inspired by Philadelphia’s rich history, architectural energy, and local craftsmanship, alongside curated artwork created by local artists.

How to Access Amex Centurion Lounges

Accessing the global network of Centurion Lounges requires eligible cardmembers to present a same-day boarding pass for a departing flight. Guests are generally permitted to enter the lounges within three hours of their scheduled departure time. For travelers on connecting itineraries, the entry window expands to allow access within five hours of the departing connecting flight.

Complimentary access is provided to holders of select premium American Express cards, including the American Express Platinum Card, the Business Platinum Card, Corporate Platinum cards, and Centurion cardmembers. Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business cardmembers are also granted access, provided they are flying on a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight that was booked directly with a U.S.-issued American Express charge or credit card. Guest access rules and potential additional fees vary depending on the specific card product held by the traveler.

Bottom Line

These four major infrastructure updates arrive on the heels of several other developmental announcements made earlier in the year. Those previous announcements included plans for a brand-new Centurion Lounge in Boston slated for 2029, a Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge concept heading to Charlotte in 2027, and a substantial physical expansion of the current lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, also expected in 2027.

These updates follow closely behind the recent grand opening of the Centurion Lounge in Amsterdam and the debut of the very first Amex Sidecar lounge concept, which opened its doors in Las Vegas earlier this spring.

Airport lounge access has evolved into one of the most fiercely competitive battlegrounds for premium credit card issuers, which continues to yield direct benefits for cardholders who travel frequently. However, as the popularity of these spaces has surged over the past decade, overcrowding during peak travel periods has historically been one of the most common complaints among premium cardmembers.

The aggressive strategy by American Express to build entirely new locations, establish secondary lounges at major global hubs, and execute massive physical expansions that double or even triple the square footage of existing facilities represents a concerted effort to address capacity issues. As one of the earliest pioneers of proprietary issuer-branded airport lounges, American Express continues to scale its physical footprint to meet the growing demands of modern travelers.
