KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is proudly celebrating a remarkable milestone this year, marking 70 years of continuous flight operations between Delhi and Amsterdam. This platinum jubilee not only commemorates seven decades of aviation history between the Indian capital and the Netherlands, but it also celebrates a vital air bridge that has consistently linked India to KLM’s expansive global network. Since launching its inaugural service from Delhi in 1955, the airline has played a pivotal role in fostering diplomatic, economic, cultural, and personal ties between the two regions, serving as a steadfast corridor for generations of travelers, families, and business enterprises.
Today, this enduring route stands proudly as one of the longest-standing and most resilient air links connecting India directly to the European continent. India remains a core focus market for KLM’s international strategy, reflecting the dynamic growth and deepening integration of the Indian subcontinent with the global economy. Demonstrating its long-term commitment to the region, the airline currently operates flights from four key Indian metropolitan hubs: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Through these strategic gateways, passengers from across India gain seamless access to more than 160 destinations worldwide via KLM’s primary European hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
As part of its ongoing dedication to the Indian market, KLM has announced robust operational plans for the upcoming winter season. The airline is set to operate up to 27 weekly flights from India, a schedule that includes a notable frequency increase on the flagship Delhi route. Travelers flying between Delhi and Amsterdam will now benefit from up to 10 flights a week, offering enhanced flexibility, greater convenience, and improved connectivity for both leisure and corporate passengers navigating between South Asia and Europe.
Reflecting on this historic anniversary, Laure Daynie, Country Manager for Air France–KLM in India, shared her reflections on the milestone achievement. Seventy years is a truly special milestone, and we are proud to celebrate this remarkable journey with our customers, business partners, and colleagues across India, Daynie noted. KLM’s first direct service between India and Amsterdam operated on the Delhi–Amsterdam route, which firmly remains one of our most important markets globally.
For seven decades, this connection has brought generations of travelers, families, and businesses closer together, linking India seamlessly with the Netherlands and KLM’s wider global network. Daynie further emphasized the contemporary significance of the anniversary, noting the alignment between the airline’s historical roots in the country and its modern strategic priorities. It is particularly meaningful that, in this milestone year, Delhi was chosen as the destination for KLM’s The Aviation Challenge flight and that our sustainability initiatives have been recognized here in India with our win at the SAF Awards 2026. We are proud to showcase in India how innovation, collaboration, and a strong commitment to sustainability can help shape the future of aviation.

KLM “The Aviation Challenge” Arrives in Delhi
The commemoration of this 70-year anniversary has seamlessly intersected with KLM’s forward-looking sustainability agenda, placing Delhi at the very heart of the airline’s environmental ambitions. On September 28, KLM operated a symbolic and pioneering flight from Amsterdam to Delhi as part of The Aviation Challenge. This collaborative industry initiative, organized under the umbrella of the SkyTeam airline alliance, brings together global carriers to test cutting-edge sustainable solutions, operational efficiencies, and eco-friendly practices, subsequently sharing critical learnings and operational data across the wider aviation industry.
The special flight to Delhi was heavily centered around raising public and industry awareness regarding Sustainable Aviation Fuel, widely known as SAF. As the aviation sector grapples with the global imperative of decarbonization, SAF serves as a critical alternative to conventional fossil-based jet fuel, offering a tangible pathway to significantly reduce the lifecycle carbon emissions of commercial flights. By executing this high-profile challenge flight to Delhi, KLM aimed to help customers, stakeholders, and industry observers better understand the vital role that sustainable fuels play in mitigating aviation’s environmental impact. Furthermore, the initiative was designed to encourage passengers and corporate partners alike to actively support the gradual, necessary transition toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible air travel options.
KLM Wins Prestigious Accolade at India SAF Awards 2026
The airline’s persistent efforts and tangible investments in environmental stewardship were further validated on the ground in the Indian capital. KLM’s comprehensive sustainability initiatives and proactive operational choices were formally recognized at the India SAF Awards 2026, an industry event organized by the SAF Association India in Delhi. In a testament to its leadership in adopting alternative fuels for commercial operations, KLM was awarded the distinguished title of Best Airline for SAF Adoption (Commercial).
This accolade underscores KLM’s proactive stance in integrating alternative fuels into its daily flight schedules, setting a benchmark for commercial aviation practices within the region. By coupling a rich, seven-decade operational history with a determined gaze toward a sustainable future, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines continues to reinforce its deep-rooted partnership with India, ensuring that the skies connecting Delhi and Amsterdam remain open, vibrant, and increasingly sustainable for generations of travelers yet to come.
