GeoServer 3.0.0 Released: Major Overhaul Brings Modernized Stack, New UI, and OIDC Integration

The open-source geospatial community has reached a significant milestone with the official release of GeoServer 3.0.0. Available now for production environments, this major stable release arrives alongside GeoTools 35.0 and GeoWebCache 2.0.0. The launch represents the culmination of a full year of intensive planning, community crowdfunding, and development designed to modernize the core architecture of the widely used mapping server while ensuring a smooth transition for existing enterprise deployments.

Welcome to GeoServer 3

The arrival of GeoServer 3 marks a new chapter for the geospatial platform. Built upon the foundation of a successful crowdfunding campaign, the new major version reflects extensive collaboration between individual contributors and supporting organizations worldwide. Despite the sweeping architectural updates, the development team has prioritized backward compatibility, implementing careful measures to ensure a straightforward and seamless upgrade path for administrators moving up from the GeoServer 2.28.x series.

GeoServer 3.0.0 Release

The realization of GeoServer 3 was made possible through the financial backing and active participation of dozens of corporate sponsors and individual donors. Organizations such as AfriGIS, Camptocamp, DLR, Dorset Council, Deutsche Telekom, Frachtwerk GmbH, GeoCat BV, Geocrafter, Comune di Genova, g.on, GeoSolutions, geosos, Geospatial Enabling Technologies, Incloud Limited, HL Consulting, IGN, ITS Digital, JDev, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, Mammoth Geospatial, the NOAA National Ocean Service, Plangis, the Office of Public Works, Open Geo Groep, OSGeo:Korea, OSGeo:UK, Quarticle Research Srl, Sea Island Software, Tailormap, terrestris, Ubigu, Value AG, Region Västra Götaland, and Waldexpert provided critical support. They were joined by a dedicated group of individual donors, including Abhijit Gujar, Hennessy Becerra, Ivana Ivanova, John Bryant, Jason Horning, Jose Macchi, Peter Smythe, Sajjadul Islam, Sebastiano Meier, and Stefan Overkamp.

Context-Driven User Experience and Responsive Design

One of the most visible changes in GeoServer 3.0.0 is the introduction of a completely refreshed, context-driven user experience. Spearheaded by Stefano Bovio of GeoSolutions, alongside contributions from Jody Garnett and other community members, the interface has been redesigned to streamline workflows for GIS professionals and administrators.

A core component of this overhaul is the new responsive design theme, which adapts cleanly to various screen sizes and device types. This improvement addresses a frequently requested feature from the community, with user interfaces carefully verified and screenshots updated by testing teams at AfriGIS and GeoCat. In addition to the administrative dashboard, GeoServer 3 introduces a brand-new, full-screen layer preview powered by the latest OpenLayers library, offering users a faster and more interactive way to inspect spatial data directly within the application.

Updated Enterprise Environment and Stack Modernization

Under the hood, GeoServer 3.0.0 brings the platform up to date with modern Java web application containers. The software now requires Tomcat 11.0.x or Jetty 12.1 application servers. This update is the direct result of the project’s completed transition to the Spring Framework 7 and the Jakarta EE Servlet API 6.1.

GeoServer 3.0.0 Release

Extensive compatibility testing has validated GeoServer 3 for use with Java 17 and Java 21, matching the Java runtime baseline established in the GeoServer 2.28.x series. While automated testing is already underway for Java 25, the development team advises production administrators to exercise caution and await community feedback before deploying the newer runtime in mission-critical environments. Due to the shift to Jakarta EE 6.1, older application servers such as Tomcat 10.x and Jetty 11.x are no longer supported, making container planning an important consideration for systems administrators preparing for the upgrade.

OAuth2 OpenID Connect Integration

Security and authentication capabilities have also been substantially expanded in this release. Building upon the migration to Spring Security 7, GeoServer 3.0.0 introduces an official OpenID Connect (OIDC) security integration extension.

The new OIDC plugin consolidates and replaces the previously separate Keycloak and OAuth2 plugins, streamlining single sign-on and modern identity management workflows for enterprise deployments. Following successful testing periods and valuable user feedback during the release candidate phase, the module has officially graduated to a fully supported core extension, complete with a dedicated migration guide to assist administrators transitioning from older authentication setups.

Markdown Documentation and Community Modules

Documentation for the platform has undergone a major transformation with the long-awaited transition to Markdown. The newly redesigned user manual offers a cleaner reading experience and is easier for the community to maintain and update. While GeoServer 3 documentation serves as the primary resource, legacy GeoServer 2.x documentation remains accessible via the version switcher on the site.

GeoServer 3.0.0 Release

The updated documentation framework also introduces a dedicated section for pending community modules. These modules represent experimental features that have been deemed ready for broader feedback by their respective development teams. By lowering the barrier for public testing and user feedback, the project aims to help these community contributions mature and eventually graduate into fully supported production extensions.

GeoServer 3.0.0 Release

The 3.0.0 release includes numerous bug fixes, performance improvements, and ongoing community module developments. Detailed release notes and comprehensive upgrade instructions are available through the official GeoServer project channels and GitHub repository.
